FAQ
Common questions from new PanoMatrix RC2 operators, covering exposure, gimbal angles, capture behaviour, storage and the software chain.
FAQ (for Beginner) — PanoMatrix RC2 × DJI Mavic 4 Pro Matrix Capture
1) Do I need to charge the PanoMatrix module?
No. The PanoMatrix module draws very little power and is powered directly from the controller through the cable. You only need to keep the RC2 controller charged. For long sessions, you can connect a power bank to the RC2 via USB-C.
2) Should I use Auto exposure / Auto aperture?
For ultra-high-res 360/180 matrix captures, use Manual exposure for consistency:
- Fixed ISO
- Fixed aperture
- Fixed white balance
Adjust mainly with shutter speed. This keeps frames consistent for stitching and grading.
3) Which gimbal tilt angles do I need to set manually?
On first-generation firmware, only 1X-UP-70 requires a manual gimbal tilt: set the gimbal to +70° before starting. With firmware V2.0 or later no manual tilt is needed — start every mode with the gimbal level.
All other matrix modes should begin with the gimbal level at 0°.
4) Do I need three missions to produce a full ultra-high-res pano?
No. In the updated workflow you need two components:
- 1× sky set (shoot full 41; typically use the upper 16)
- One 6× lower-hemisphere set: choose 6X-H-0 (372) or 6X-H-15 (444) depending on scene geometry.
5) What’s the difference between 6X-H-0 and 6X-H-15?
- 6X-H-0 (372 shots): start at 0°; suitable when a horizon-level sweep covers everything you need at 6×.
- 6X-H-15 (444 shots): adds upward coverage (system offsets to +15° and shoots additional rings). Use it when tall/close structures enter the upper zone and you want them captured at full 6× detail.
6) Why did my 6X-H-0 sequence not capture the lower hemisphere?
If executed correctly and allowed to complete, 6X-H-0 does include downward coverage (the last portion points downward; the final shot is straight down).
If you don’t see lower-hemisphere coverage, the most common reasons are:
- The gimbal was not truly at 0° level at start, or
- The sequence was canceled early and did not finish.
7) When a new row starts, how far should the gimbal tilt change?
When you are using 6x lenses capture mode, approximately 7.5° per row (sometimes displayed as ~8° due to rounding).
You can verify this directly by watching the gimbal tilt number on the screen.
8) My gimbal only tilts down a very small amount each row — what does that mean?
This usually means the gimbal parameters were reset or changed. It most often happens the first time you receive the controller and sign in to your own DJI account, which loads that account’s own settings, or after the controller has been reset as a whole.
Re-apply the exact gimbal parameters, save them, power-cycle the RC2, then re-check that the values remain correct. See the DJI Fly gimbal parameter list →
9) If I need to stop a pano after pressing Start, do I press Start again?
No. On first-generation firmware you had to toggle the power switch on the PanoMatrix module (near the antenna), which reset the module and stopped the capture commands. With firmware V2.53 this is no longer necessary: press and hold the Mode button for 5 seconds. The module aborts the capture sequence and returns to the program menu — no power cycle and no reset. Never switch the RC2 off while the aircraft is connected or in flight.
Do not power off the RC2 while the aircraft is connected/in flight.
10) Do settings retain when switching between Creator Pro and PanoMatrix controllers?
Settings are stored per controller. When you switch controllers, the aircraft follows the active controller’s settings.
Recommendation: dedicate the PanoMatrix controller for matrix capture, and keep your Creator Pro controller for your normal flying/video setup.
11) What battery level do I need before starting a 6× sequence?
Rule of thumb: ~1% battery per ~10 photos (varies with wind, temperature, and travel distance).
Reserve at least:
- ~38% for 372 shots
- ~45% for 444 shots
If you start with insufficient battery and must stop mid-sequence, the partial set is not usable (no resume).
12) Can I resume a sequence if it was interrupted (battery, safety, etc.)?
No. There is no resume function. If interrupted, you must re-fly and re-shoot the full sequence.
13) How can I return to the exact same capture position for a re-shoot?
Record repeatable references:
- Exact altitude
- A clear “straight-down” crosshair reference point (roof feature / pavement pattern / landmark)
This makes it possible to re-shoot 1× and 6× in separate flights and still stitch successfully.
14) What software is required for the full ultra-high-res workflow?
Core tools:
- DxO PureRAW 5
- Lightroom
- PTGui Pro
- KR Pano
Recommended additional tool:
- Adobe Photoshop (sky blending/seam cleanup/master output prep)
15) I’m new — what is the best way to learn the capture patterns quickly?
Do a controlled test in a wide open area: hover at ~2–3 m and run each mode one at a time (even if it costs 2–3 batteries). Watch the gimbal/aircraft movement and confirm row tilt steps on-screen. The patterns don’t change — pilot familiarity matters most.
